"All Aboard"

The children have built their own train and using their imagination have travelled to The Lake District, Thomas world, The Zoo, the beach and a party which meant we needed to wrap presents before going.

Even though going on a train journey was something not many of the children had done they soon shared ideas of what they needed and what would happen.

We needed a driver, a horn blower and the person to collect all the tickets ( the whole learning journey was extremely important, at one point no one could get through nursery door without a ticket!)

"I'm the driver and X blows the horn when we go in the tunnel"

"This is where you can go on the train"

Every journey meant a picnic of fruit, sandwiches and drinks.

Next half term we will be looking at holidays and the world. If you have any old holiday brochures please can you send them in for us to use. Thank you.

Shape, Space and measure

In maths we have been thinking about capacity, weight, length and height in shape, space and measure.

The younger children have been using tools to fill and empty containers using language such as 'full' 'empty' and 'more'. In looking at weight we looked at heavier and lighter user our large scales.

The older children have been estimating (guessing how many) and counting how many spoons, cups, jugs or handfuls it takes to fill different shaped containers. Some children recognised the different numbers on the scales and containers.

Sequencing how to plants seeds.

The skills learnt were used in planting our seeds and measuring their growth. The children estimated how much compost they would need for pots and tubes, with some saying they hadn't guessed enough so would need so many more.

As soon as our sweet peas started to grow through the compost we used the tape measure to measure how tall the plants were, recognising the number and remembering we need to start at 0. We are hoping that before the summer holidays they will be as tall as the big metre ruler with lots of lovely smelling flowers.
